TRANSITION TO MOTHERHOOD:
Dr. Shanti shared a quote:
“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother — NEVER. A mother is something absolutely new.”
The quote itself summarizes some of her transitions into motherhood. According to Shanti, the transition was like a whole new journey. As an individual in eating disorder recovery, it was like “a recovery beyond her wildest dreams, totally different in ways that she could never imagine.”
EPISODE SUMMARY:
- She discovered experientially the many overlaps in the journey of new motherhood and recovery for eating disorder: body image, shifts in recovery in new motherhood, sleep, food, hormones and mood, career transitions, relationships and partner transitions, identity transformation.
- She describes the feeling after pregnancy as like having a whole new self that has elements of your old self.
- Linda highlights the various support systems that can help mothers in their recovery after pregnancy. According to her, support may come in a lot of different ways. In some cases that may have to deal with a medical or psychological condition, seeking professional support would definitely be part of that.
- Another support that she mentioned is about being part of motherhood support groups that are tailored according to your situation. (Ex: corporate mom, stay at home moms, part-time working moms, etc…)
- Linda also encourages moms to find their “Mom Tribe.” Try to make new friends. And if you haven’t, give yourself time. She provides some great tips on how to test out new friendships and decide who you’d like to pursue deeper relationships with.

Episode Summary:
Liz is a registered dietitian who she runs her own nutrition communications business. Most of her clients are from the food service industry and the communication side of the field. Oftentimes, Liz creates recipes on her blog Shaw Simple Swaps.
On the other hand, Liz also shares about her other big passion that has grown over the last couple of years. She runs a second website called Bumps to Baby where her purpose is to create a community to support people who are struggling with infertility.
Liz has a desire to be a voice for people who aren’t ready to speak about what they are going through. Infertility can be isolating so her goal is to make sure that every woman feels that they are not alone. Since she started Bumps to Baby, Liz has started to feel a sense of belongingness that she is not alone by being with these women who also want the same thing as her. She believes that if one can try to be positive, then the positivity is going to be contagious.
Expectations and Experiences after launching Bumps to Baby:
When asked about the things she never expected when she started her Bumps to Baby community, she simply quoted, “There’s so much love!” Through Bumps to Baby, Liz met so many wonderful women through various social media platforms wherein she had the chance to share intimate conversations with them.
When asked about how did she find ways to care for herself?
- Knowing when she needed to be alone – She considers it as a very important factor in her fertility journey. Having time alone is a form of self-care wherein she allows herself not to stress about doing too much or being with others. For Liz, it’s all about slowing down your pace, taking time to sit and just relax even by just watching a TV show or simply reading a book.
Quotes from the episode:
“If you’ve struggled with anything, again, it doesn’t have to be infertility, you have wounds and you have this story to tell and you have something that someone else out there can relate to — don’t feel alone in it.” – [37:19]
“Everyone has their story and don’t feel that your story isn’t as important as the next person because it is and someone else can relate to it.” – [37:40]

TRANSITION TO MOTHERHOOD:
Jennifer considers her transition to motherhood as the “most whirlwind time” of her entire life. With all of her excitement regarding her pregnancy and becoming a parent, she recalls that her transition to motherhood was a chaotic time — both positive and negative — because it was very different than what she expected.
In her second pregnancy, Jennifer has learned to have more realistic expectations. This time around, she feels she has more realistic insight into how her body changes, what she has to do in order to protect herself in the sense of having her “self-care time” while her family grows. She also shares that she has learned to make time to connect with her child, connect to her husband, and connect to her own self, too.
She learned from her first child what’s most important in her life based on the values that she has and the values that she wants to bring to her new family. It’s not the stuff that she could give to the baby (perfect nursery, baby items), but it’s the love, care, kindness, and making sure that her whole family is functioning as a family.
The biggest lesson she has learned is that she can’t do it all. She acknowledges the fact that she really needs to ask for help. She learned to pay attention regarding how much self-care she needs and prioritizing a portion of her time to be able to do that.
“There’s self-care for your body and then self-care for your soul.” [14:09]
JENNIFER SHARES SOME NUGGETS OF HER EXPERIENCE WITH BODY IMAGE DURING POSTPARTUM:
Jennifer explains that her postpartum experience was more difficult than her pregnancy period. She shares a story about her experiences with negative body image and how the chaos of postpartum impacted that.
JENNIFER SHARES ABOUT THE SPECIFIC THINGS SHE’S DOING TO NURTURE HERSELF:
She’s learning to embrace the flexibility aspect of having her second child. Although she may not have the idea of how her pregnancy or postpartum is going to be, she’s trying to embrace the concept of being present in the moment and taking things one step at a time.
Jennifer came to know that she needs to ask for help right away. She admits that she cannot be the person that’s capable to do it all. She cannot be the person that’s going to be solely responsible for her children, for her household and her business. She learned that she needs some help in every aspect of it. Whether it be hiring a babysitter, or a mother’s helper, keeping her son at his childcare, asking her husband for help, asking her family for help, and even asking her friends about what they feel and what’s going on with them. According to her, having that kind of support and that kind of relationship would be very important.
