Busy Mom's Starter Guide to Making Peace with Food

Parents receive conflicting messages about feeding. We’re told that getting the right nutrients is incredibly important to our child’s health and wellbeing. Then, we’re told that we should simply offer our kids food and let them decide whether and how much to eat. So, how do we follow both sets of advice? The fact is, nutrition is the result of a trusting feeding relationship, and if you can learn to appreciate your kiddo’s presentation and respond to their cues, you can achieve a stress-free mealtime.
Grace Wong is a certified eating disorder registered dietitian with 15 years of clinical experience in mental health and pediatric nutrition. Grace works with a diverse presentation of feeding and eating disorders and supports children with co-existing conditions like ADHD, autism, sensory processing challenges, anxiety, depression, addiction and trauma. She is committed to helping clients uncover their family feeding history and establish a comfortable environment at mealtime. Grace’s practice is based in Calgary, and she does online coaching through her Facebook business page.
Today, Grace joins us to explain how she supports parents whose kids have complex feeding presentations. She discusses the concept of food acceptance, sharing her aim to get children to a place where variety is not disruptive and her approach to establishing a peaceful mealtime. EPISODE SUMMARY:
In this solo podcast, Lindsay dives into the topic of diet culture and the impact it has on a mother’s wellness before, during and after baby. From a very young age, a foundation is laid for us in Western culture – your body can’t be trusted, your weight determines your health and worth and, particularly as women, you should spend large amounts of time distracted by food and body “stuff.” This episode looks at how this foundation sets us up for challenges with food and body before, during and after pregnancy and why we must challenge these messages. You CAN opt out of diet culture!

TRANSITION TO MOTHERHOOD:
Dr. Shanti shared a quote:
“The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The woman existed, but the mother — NEVER. A mother is something absolutely new.”
The quote itself summarizes some of her transitions into motherhood. According to Shanti, the transition was like a whole new journey. As an individual in eating disorder recovery, it was like “a recovery beyond her wildest dreams, totally different in ways that she could never imagine.”
EPISODE SUMMARY:
- She discovered experientially the many overlaps in the journey of new motherhood and recovery for eating disorder: body image, shifts in recovery in new motherhood, sleep, food, hormones and mood, career transitions, relationships and partner transitions, identity transformation.
- She describes the feeling after pregnancy as like having a whole new self that has elements of your old self.
- Linda highlights the various support systems that can help mothers in their recovery after pregnancy. According to her, support may come in a lot of different ways. In some cases that may have to deal with a medical or psychological condition, seeking professional support would definitely be part of that.
- Another support that she mentioned is about being part of motherhood support groups that are tailored according to your situation. (Ex: corporate mom, stay at home moms, part-time working moms, etc…)
- Linda also encourages moms to find their “Mom Tribe.” Try to make new friends. And if you haven’t, give yourself time. She provides some great tips on how to test out new friendships and decide who you’d like to pursue deeper relationships with.

TRANSITION TO MOTHERHOOD:
Seven years ago, Jen discovered that she is pregnant. Upon browsing the internet, she read about various medical conditions that made her feel devastated instead of being excited of her pregnancy. It was hard for her to find positive information about being plus-size pregnant online.
Jen shared about her experience of hiring a doula and how she was very grateful for making that decision. According to her, her doula was the first person who validated and supported her with realizing her size really didn’t prohibit her from having a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
Jen talks about how she had a completely healthy pregnancy. She started to develop a new relationship with her body as well as during this time. Because of that, she decided to tell her story. Overall, Jen summarizes her transition to motherhood is also her journey to becoming a birth professional and really doing advocacy for people of size around pregnancies and beyond.
EPISODE SUMMARY:
- Jen talks about how she started her blog Plus Size Mommy Memoirs — from being a blog about her experiences to a movement about empowering plus size women to seek size-friendly care and pursue the pregnancy and birth they want.
- As a childbirth educator, Jen not educates moms but also birth professionals, especially for doulas and midwives. She works to break down the increased risk and how they can help people to learn about the risk but not in a biased and scary way.
- Jen talks about the possibility of developing gestational diabetes for plus-size women, pre-eclampsia, bigger baby, and also the possibility of giving a cesarean birth.
- After six and a half years, Jen found out that there are 3 keys for helping people to have a healthy pregnancy when they are plus-size (hint: They’re similar to what a non-plus size women would do!):
> Eat nutritious foods.
> To be physically active in whatever way that they can be possibly able to be active.
> To connect with the size-friendly care provider.
- When Jen was asked about the things a plus-size pregnant woman can do to start embracing and feeling good about her pregnancy:
a. Finding a good care.
b. Hiring a doula and learning what a doula is.
c. Start connecting to a size-friendly dietitian.
d. Being physically active.
